How to elope

Modern eloping is not running away in secret, it is choosing a wedding built around the two of you. That can mean literally two people on a glacier, or ten loved ones at a cliff-edge ceremony. Decide your headcount philosophy first; every other decision hangs off it.

Every country handles marriage differently: Iceland and New Zealand are easy for foreigners, Italy is bureaucratic, Colorado lets you marry yourselves with no officiant at all. Many couples sign paperwork at home and hold the real ceremony abroad. Decide this in month one and the rest relaxes.

A complete destination elopement, photography, planning, flights, lodging, celebrant and dinner, typically lands between $9,000 and $20,000. That is a third of the $34,000 average US wedding, for a day that is entirely yours.

US national parks require special use permits ($50 to $300, some booking a year out). International locations vary from none to modest fees. A specialist photographer files these for you; it is a standard part of our planning.
