Iceland is the most popular adventure elopement destination on earth for a simple reason: nowhere else packs black sand beaches, glacier lagoons, basalt canyons, volcanic deserts and two-hundred-foot waterfalls into a single day's drive. Foreign couples can legally marry here with straightforward paperwork through the District Commissioner, English is spoken everywhere, and the weather, moody, fast-moving, occasionally furious, is exactly what makes the photographs unforgettable.
We have photographed elopements across the south coast, the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the highlands, in midnight sun and in horizontal sleet. Iceland recognises civil marriages of foreign nationals with modest paperwork and no residency requirement. Your marriage certificate is recognised in the US, UK, EU, Australia and most of the world.

Midnight sun in June means golden hour lasts until 1 a.m. September to March trades daylight for aurora. Either way, the sky is doing half the work.

Reynisfjara & the Vík coastline
The famous black sand beach with basalt sea stacks. Brutal, graphic, cinematic. We shoot it at first light before the buses, then move east toward the quieter black beaches only locals use.
Skógafoss & Seljalandsfoss
Two of the south coast's great waterfalls. Skógafoss delivers scale and spray, Seljalandsfoss lets you walk behind the curtain of water for backlit ceremony portraits nobody believes are real.
Sólheimajökull & the glacier tongues
Blue ice, black ash, and safe walking routes with a certified glacier guide we arrange. A ceremony on ancient ice is the single most requested moment in our Iceland bookings.

The Highlands (Landmannalaugar)
Rhyolite mountains in ochre and rust, reachable in summer by super-jeep. For couples who want genuine remoteness, this is the deep end.

The paperwork
Getting legally married in Iceland
Foreign couples can legally marry in Iceland. You apply through the District Commissioner (Sýslumaður) and submit a marriage notification form, birth certificates, passports, and a certificate of marital status issued within 8 weeks of the wedding, at least three weeks before your date. Civil ceremonies can be performed by a District Commissioner's office or, more commonly for elopements, by an independent celebrant from Siðmennt (the humanist association), who will happily hike to your ceremony spot.
Many of our couples do the legal signing at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Iceland instead. It removes all paperwork pressure and changes nothing about how the day feels. We walk you through both routes and handle celebrant introductions either way.
Iceland elopement questions
Can foreigners legally get married in Iceland?
Yes. Iceland has no residency requirement. You submit paperwork to the District Commissioner at least three weeks before your date, including birth certificates, passports and a recent certificate of marital status. Your Icelandic marriage certificate is recognised internationally.
How much does an Iceland elopement cost?
With us, photography plus complete planning starts at $5,000 for 8 hours, travel included. Adding flights, 4 nights' accommodation, a celebrant, florals and dinner, most couples spend $9,000 to $15,000 all-in, roughly a third of the average traditional wedding.
When can we see the northern lights at our elopement?
Aurora season runs September through March. Sightings need dark, clear skies and solar activity, so we build aurora hunting into multi-day winter itineraries rather than promising them on a single night.
Do we need a permit to elope in Iceland?
Most public locations require no permit for small ceremonies. Some private-land sites (certain canyons, glacier lagoon zones) and drone use have rules we handle for you as part of planning.
Is winter too risky for an Iceland elopement?
Winter needs flexibility, not courage. We build weather buffers into the itinerary, keep locations within safe driving range, and have moved ceremony times by hours to meet a clearing sky. The storms are also why winter galleries look the way they do.
