Eloping in Hawaii

Hawaii is the rare destination where the legal part costs less than dinner: a marriage licence runs $65, is applied for online, and is picked up together from a licence agent within 30 days of your ceremony, with no waiting period and no residency requirement. Then the islands hand you a 10,023-foot volcano sunrise, jungle waterfalls, sea cliffs and warm-water beaches, all inside one state and one currency.

Each island argues a different case. Maui gives you Haleakala's crater rim at dawn and the waterfall coast of the Road to Hana. Oahu packs ridgelines and reef-break beaches within an hour of an international airport. Kauai's Na Pali cliffs are the most dramatic coastline in the United States, and the Big Island adds black sand and active volcanic landscapes. We plan island choice, beach permits, licence timing and a schedule that respects how early Hawaiian light peaks.

An 8-hour Hawaii elopement with us starts at $5,000, travel included. Two-day itineraries from $8,500 pair a summit sunrise with a beach sunset. Multi-island trips run up to $12,000.

Why couples elope in Hawaii

The easiest licence in the islands' time zone

Apply online, pay $65, then meet a licence agent together within 30 days of the ceremony. No waiting period, no residency requirement, valid statewide for 30 days. Add an officiant, required in Hawaii, and the legal part is done.

Four islands, four ecosystems

A volcano summit above the clouds, rainforest waterfalls, red sea cliffs and calm turquoise bays are all one short flight apart. No other US destination lets one trip hold this much variety.

No off-season

Air temperatures sit between 24 and 31°C all year. Winter brings humpback whales and bigger surf, summer brings the calmest water. Whatever month your life allows, Hawaii has an argument for it.

Sunrise and sunset both deliver

East-facing summits like Haleakala own dawn; leeward beaches own dusk. We routinely build days that open at 10,000 feet in alpine cold and close barefoot in 27°C water. Few places on earth allow that sentence.

The best places to elope in Hawaii

01

Haleakala summit, Maui

Sunrise above a cloud sea from the crater rim at 10,023 feet. Sunrise entry between 3 and 7 a.m. requires a recreation.gov reservation released 60 days ahead, and ceremonies inside the national park need their own permit. Pack real layers: dawn up here sits near freezing.

02

Road to Hana, Maui

Sixty-plus bridges of jungle coastline: waterfalls, bamboo forest, black sand at Waianapanapa, whose state park now requires timed entry reservations for visitors. We treat Hana as a full portrait day, not a checklist drive, and stay ahead of the tour vans by starting at dawn.

03

Ka'anapali & Maui's leeward beaches

Reliable dry sunsets, gold sand and calm water on the island's west side. Unencumbered state beaches host permitted ceremonies, and winter dates come with humpback whales breaching behind your vows.

04

Oahu's windward coast

Lanikai and Waimanalo offer powder sand and offshore islets, with the Ko'olau ridgelines minutes inland for a second act. Oahu is the pick for couples flying guests in, since everything sits within an hour of Honolulu's airport.

05

Kauai's north shore & Na Pali

Hanalei Bay's mountain amphitheater, one-lane bridges and, beyond the road's end, the 4,000-foot fluted cliffs of Na Pali, best met by boat or helicopter at golden hour. The wettest island and the most cinematic, so we plan flexible mornings.

06

Big Island black sand & Volcanoes

Punalu'u's black sand with basking sea turtles, new coastline where lava met sea, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's craters and steam vents, permit required for ceremonies. The Big Island suits couples who want strange and elemental over postcard-pretty.

Getting legally married in Hawaii

Hawaii's marriage licence is one of the simplest in the United States. You apply and pay online, $65 total, then both of you meet a marriage licence agent in person, together, no more than 30 days before your ceremony to be issued the licence. There is no waiting period, no residency or citizenship requirement, and the licence is valid for 30 days anywhere in the state. Hawaii does require a licensed officiant to perform the ceremony, and the officiants we work with handle beaches, summits and boats. Agents sit on every major island, so the appointment folds neatly into your first vacation day.

Locations carry their own rules. Ceremonies on unencumbered state beaches need a right-of-entry permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, arranged through its online Wiki Permits system with liability insurance, which your officiant or planner typically carries; fees are modest and structures, arches and chairs are restricted on most beaches. County beach parks run separate systems, and the national parks, Haleakala and Hawaii Volcanoes, require their own special use permits, with Haleakala sunrise visits also needing a recreation.gov vehicle reservation. We map the permit stack for your exact spots so the day itself is nothing but easy.

Hawaii elopement questions

How do we get a marriage licence in Hawaii?

Apply online through the state's marriage registration system and pay $65, then meet a licence agent in person, both of you together, within 30 days of the ceremony. There is no waiting period or residency requirement, and the licence works on every island for 30 days. Hawaii does require a licensed officiant, which we arrange.

Do we need a permit for a beach wedding in Hawaii?

On unencumbered state beaches, yes: a right-of-entry permit through the DLNR's online system, with liability insurance usually carried by your officiant or planner. Rules keep most beaches free of chairs, arches and structures, which suits elopements fine. County parks and the national parks have separate permits. We handle whichever your location needs.

Which Hawaiian island is best for an elopement?

Maui for range: Haleakala sunrise, the Hana coast and reliable west-side sunsets. Kauai for pure drama on the Na Pali cliffs. Oahu for guest logistics near Honolulu. The Big Island for volcanic landscapes and black sand. Most of our couples pick one island per trip; two is doable across a week.

How does Haleakala sunrise work for an elopement?

Sunrise entry, 3 to 7 a.m., requires a recreation.gov vehicle reservation released 60 days ahead, with a small batch two days out, plus park entry. Ceremonies inside the park need a special use permit. Summit dawn runs near 0°C before the sun clears the clouds, so we brief you on layers you will actually wear over wedding clothes.

How much does a Hawaii elopement cost?

Our photography and planning starts at $5,000 for 8 hours, travel included. Add the $65 licence, an officiant around $300 to $500, permits, flights, and five nights' accommodation at Hawaii resort prices, and most couples spend $10,000 to $16,000 all-in, still well under an average mainland wedding.
