Erg Chebbi sits a nine-to-ten-hour drive from Marrakech, across the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the Draa Valley, which is why our Morocco elopements run as multi-day journeys rather than single days. The best places to elope in Morocco
Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
Morocco's great accessible sand sea, dunes to roughly 150 metres just beyond the village of Merzouga. Camels or a 4x4 take you in; the crest lines at sunset and sunrise are the frames couples come for. We time both, with the camp between them.
A private desert camp
The camps on Erg Chebbi's fringe range from simple to genuinely luxurious, with proper beds, rugs over the sand and dinner by fire. We book the quiet side of the dunes and hold ceremonies out of sight of every other camp.
The High Atlas & the Tizi n'Tichka
The road to the desert crosses a 2,260-metre pass through Berber villages and switchbacks. Around Imlil, walnut groves and mud-brick hamlets sit under Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 metres. We build a session into the crossing rather than driving past it.
Aït Benhaddou
The fortified mud-brick ksar on the desert road, a UNESCO site stacked on its hill above a river oasis. Late afternoon light turns the whole village copper. It breaks the long drive exactly where a break is needed.
A Marrakech riad
Behind unmarked medina doors: fountains, zellige tile, orange trees and rooftops facing the Koutoubia minaret. We use a rented riad for preparation, portraits and the final dinner, and the medina's dye souks and lantern shops for a wander session.
The Agafay desert
For couples without time for the Sahara, Agafay's stone desert sits 45 minutes from Marrakech with camps, camels and Atlas views. It is not Erg Chebbi and we say so plainly, but at sunset it earns its place.

The paperwork
Getting legally married in Morocco
Legal marriage in Morocco is a genuinely long process built for residents, not visitors. Two non-Moroccan foreigners marrying here need authorisation from the Ministry of Justice, police background checks, translated and legalised documents, and an adoul (marriage notary) ceremony, a chain that routinely takes months and offers no advantage over marrying at home. For a couple flying in for a week, it is not a realistic path, and no honest planner will tell you otherwise.
So the symbolic ceremony is simply how Morocco elopements work. Sign your legal paperwork at home before or after the trip, and hold your ceremony on a dune crest, a riad rooftop or an Atlas ridgeline with a celebrant or your own read vows. Every part of the day photographs and feels identical, and your certificate from home is valid everywhere.

Can foreigners legally get married in Morocco?
Technically yes, practically no. Two foreign visitors need Ministry of Justice authorisation, police checks, legalised translated documents and an adoul ceremony, a process that takes months. Virtually all foreign couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Morocco, which is the route we plan.
How do we get to the Sahara dunes?
Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is a nine-to-ten-hour drive from Marrakech over the Atlas, so we run it as a two-day journey with stops at the Tizi n'Tichka pass and Aït Benhaddou. Flying Marrakech to Errachidia or Ouarzazate shortens the road. The final dune approach is by 4x4 or camel.
When should we elope in Morocco?
October through April. Desert days run 17 to 28°C with cold, star-heavy nights, and the Atlas often carries snow above the palm valleys. May to September the Saharan interior regularly exceeds 40°C, which we do not photograph weddings in, and neither should you.

Is a dress practical on the dunes?
Yes, with planning. Sand is kind to hems and brutal to heels, so flat sandals or bare feet win. We schedule dune sessions for the last two hours of light when the sand cools, carry water and a change kit on the 4x4, and keep the camel ride separate from the dress.
